Cork is a safe city for visitors by European standards. Like any city, a few residential estates have a reputation, but they are away from the centre and visitors have little reason to go there.
Staying safe in the city centre
The centre is busy and well lit in the evenings, especially around St Patrick’s Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and Washington Street. The usual city common sense applies:
- Keep an eye on phones and bags in crowded pubs and at festivals.
- Stick to busy streets late at night and avoid quiet laneways and riverside paths after closing time.
- Use a licensed taxi or a ride app to get back to your accommodation late at night.
Good areas to stay
For first-time visitors, the city centre island, the Victorian Quarter around MacCurtain Street and the area near the Mardyke are all handy and popular places to base yourself.
