The Vernon Spring is the musical project of North London-born artist Sam Beste, whose work spans jazz, soul, ambient music, and songwriting. Sam’s musical journey began with his father’s vast record collection, which featured everything from Thelonious Monk and Bob Dylan to D’Angelo and Luigi Nono. At the age of eleven, a serendipitous piano lesson set him on a path that would ignite a lifelong passion for improvisation, shaping both his artistic identity and career.
Sam’s talent soon caught the attention of Amy Winehouse, for whom he became the live pianist during much of her career’s rise. This collaboration opened doors to a wide array of other notable projects, including work with Gabriels, Sounwave (Kendrick Lamar’s producer), Beth Orton, Kano, Joy Crookes, Matthew Herbert, and MF DOOM.
After spending his twenties writing and performing with the alt-soul band Hejira, Sam co-founded the Lima Limo collective and label, which provided a vibrant, creative community. By 2019, he began releasing solo material under the moniker The Vernon Spring, blending his jazz background with modern electronic elements. His debut EP, followed by releases such as A Plane Over Woods and Earth, On A Good Day, has cemented his distinctive sound—delicate piano, emotive vocals, and layered electronics—marking The Vernon Spring as a unique voice in contemporary music.
