Michael Kiwanuka is very pleased to announce details of his second album, Love & Hate, and the unveiling of its first single, Black Man In A White World.
Love & Hate is released on the 27th May through Polydor Records. It was recorded in LA and London, and produced by Grammy Award winner Brian Joseph Burton AKA Danger Mouse, and young British producer, Inflo.
In line with its announcement, the British musician is proud to unveil the first single from the album, Black Man In A White World. The track is backed by a Hiro Murai directed video. The Japanese director is renowned for his work with Flying Lotus and Earl Sweatshirt.

Love & Hate is a fascinatingly assured and resonant body of work, and follows Michael’s acclaimed 2012 debut LP, Home Again. Having introduced himself and that voice to the world in 2011 with the raw soul of Tell Me A Tale, Love & Hate is a record that sounds as though it has been unearthed from a long forgotten studio canister in the seventies, but is permeated with a timelessness that defies any artist of any specific era. If the ‘death of the album’ is still an ongoing conversation, Michael Kiwanuka’s new record is a startling, emphatic response to its enduring importance.
Where Coming Home provoked comparisons to the likes of Bill Withers and Otis Redding, Michael’s new album struts to a much more psychedelic, freeform beat. Its opening number, the peerless ten-minute opus Cold Little Heart evokes the haze of Pink Floyd in its unhurried slow-burn, whilst Falling is a soaring gospel number for the 21st century. There are standout tunes throughout, but really Love & Hate is an album that genuinely deserves to be listened to as one, littered as it is with ‘headphones moments’ that require real attention to the light and shade of its creation.
“I’ve always wanted to make an album that felt and sounded like this one” states Kiwanuka. “ Working with guys as good as Danger Mouse and Inflo really helped me find what I was looking for. I hope this is just the start of more music to come.”
Speaking on his part in the project, Danger Mouse claims “I’d been wanting to work with Michael for a while and once we did a song, we just felt like we should keep going. I knew he had a great voice, but his guitar playing on this album was very important. Inflo was the very important last piece that really kept it all going. We really did feel like we were making an important album.”
Honest, unabashed, and ambitious, this is Kiwanuka emerging from the emotional cocoon of his first album, and ready to secure his position as one of the UKs most exciting homegrown talents. It’s a new world since his debut, and it seems that it’s his for the taking.
