Dennehy’s Bar

Address: 11 Cornmarket Street, Cork, T12 TX97, Ireland

Dennehy’s Bar is a historic and celebrated traditional Irish pub, rated one of ‘Cork’s Best Bars’ by The Guardian newspaper. The pub first opened its doors in 1957 on Cornmarket Street—known locally as the Coal Quay—within a building that dates back to 1760. Steeped in the tradition and heritage of Cork’s historic old town, Dennehy’s remains a family-run establishment, currently managed by the children of the original founder. The bar is a living homage to the area’s history, which was a centuries-old hub for working-class street traders known as ‘the Shawlies’.

The pub holds a special place in local legend, being famously associated with Cork character Kathy Barry (1909-82), who frequented the bar three times a day for a whiskey and stout. In fact, one of the most famous photographs of Kathy Barry, which now adorns many Irish bars worldwide, was taken at Dennehy’s in 1980 and an original print still hangs on the wall. While embracing some modern amenities like a Spotify playlist, the bar remains true to its roots, offering an authentic, unpretentious traditional Irish pub experience with a rich sense of history.
