Established in 1820, Charlie’s Bar is one of Cork’s most historic and characterful pubs, located right on Union Quay by the water. It maintains its traditional ambiance with features like brick walls, a slate floor, a spiral staircase, and a cozy coal fire in the winter. Known for being a former “early house” (sometimes opening at 7:00 AM, though current hours are typically 2:00 PM onwards), it historically served a diverse clientele, from dockers to doctors. It’s renowned as a “no-frills bar” where patrons can enjoy reasonably priced pints, a lively “craic,” and friendly conversation with locals. The pub also offers an outside seating area across the road that is partially covered, providing table service.

In recent years, Charlie’s has evolved into a key musical haven in Cork City. The pub hosts regular live music five nights a week, featuring some of the best local, national, and international acts. Its music programming is diverse, covering genres from Rock, Blues, Folk, to Traditional Irish music. A major highlight is the “Lee Trad Session” held every Sunday afternoon. While a full food menu is not its primary feature, the focus is on a great pint and an excellent atmosphere.
